I caught the train through to Limburg yesterday and cycled 40km through to Nassau (not my favourite town but pretty enough) where I stayed the night. Then this morning I cycled the final 25 km out to Lahnstein where the Lahn meets the Rhine and on to Koblenz to catch the train back home.
From Limburg on there were larger pleasure boats out on the river, which I hadn't seen before, but the Lahn is a pipsqueak compared to the size of the Rhine. The Lahn is a very flat river with very little flow but there are a lot more lochs in the lower reaches and the banks are a lot steeper with more cliffs. Quite the opposite to rivers in NZ where the source of a river tends to be in steep hill or mountains and flattens out towards the coast.
I have loved the change from rolling hill country and little towns to steeper sided valleys and much larger towns and castles. However the countryside has been heavily forested from top to bottom with farmland scattered throughout. Something NZ lacks!
