Bochum was very heavily bombed during the war, being a coal mining and manufacturing area, unlike Marburg, which was untouched. As a result it has been rebuilt with huge wide streets in the downtown area (photo) and all the cars are underground. The university has 50,000 students and is an incredible concrete jungle. However the university has amazing glass houses within its Botanic gardens. There are over 40,000 cacti and succulents alone.
From the 10th story you can see 2 other towns just in one direction.
There is also a wonderful coal mining museum in the city. Marvellous models and exhibits plus you go under ground and up the drilling rig.
Unfortunately missed out by one day seeing "Starlight Express". It's been running here for nearly 30 years in a purpose built theatre.
